“During the 1950’s the Southern Cone of Latin
America underwent an economic and social
revolution. Following the example of the New
Deal in the United States nationalist
governments in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and
Chile undertook public works on a massive
scale – schools, highways, hospitals. They
subsidised businesses to kick-start their
economies and taxed foreign imports to
protect their own industries

… In 1973 Pinochet appointed several Milton
Friedman pupils as advisors. The junta’s
economic policies had been written before the
coup by a group of “Chicago boys” using CIA
money… Government spending was cut, Chile
was flooded with foreign imports, banks and
state-owned companies were privatised;
speculative financers – las piranhas had a field
day.

… In 1974, inflation was at 375%, the cost of
living soared and unemployment rocketed as
factories went bust, unable to compete with
cheap imports. This spelled untold misery for
the Chileans, but large and easy profits for las
piranhas and the multinationals

….Brazil was next, followed by Uruguay and
Argentina. From post-hurricane New Orleans to
Iraq, the list of countries subjected to the
Chicago treatment is long and not limited to
the developing world.”
